about Melanie

In 2012, Melanie Berg quit her job as an IT specialist to live her passion: She’s designing knitwear. She combines texture and color into wearable modern designs that are both playful and beautiful. Melanie designs to surprise — from matching cheeky stripes with elegant lace, to choosing unexpected color combinations. She loves to collaborate with other creative types around the world, and her patterns have been published by yarn companies and knitting magazines large and small. „Shawls“ and „Colorwork Shawls“, her two books, have been eagerly awaited by the knitting world and are now available.

the schedule

We will welcome you in Hohenstein on Thursday, 27th August from 3 p.m. with a piece of homemade cake, a glass of prosecco and a cup of tea. We will all gather around our big workshop table at around 5 p.m. for an opening session until we head over to the restaurant for dinner.

On Friday morning we will start the day with a workshop on Colourwork Shawls. In the afternoon we will meet over some cake for a tipps & tricks session where everybody is welcome to share your knitting expertise. Saturday will be filled with a workshop on Shawl Construction in the morning and a free afternoon to stroll around the beautiful area or to gather for a relaxed time of sit & knit. On Sunday morning Melanie will talk about Finishing your handknits. The afternoon session on Sunday will finish with a show & tell at 4 p.m. We will be leaving Hohenstein by 5 p.m. on Sunday…with plenty new knitting skills to take home.

Each participant will receive a Ravelry Code for one of  Melanie’s Ravelry patterns to download before the workshop. This will make a great project to work on during the Mairlynd Knitting Retreat.

the workshops

Colourwork Shawls (Friday)

Meet Melanie and a wide variety of her colorwork shawls that she’ll be bringing in for this workshop.

Learn more about different ways to add some color to your knitting and choose among four of Melanie’s designs to cast on for: Ashburn, Moonraker, Ropedance or Nangou. We’ll talk about the different colorwork techniques used in these patterns and will try them out, and you will receive a printed copy of the pattern, along with many helpful tips & tricks that Melanie will share with you.

Skill Level: confident beginner to intermediate
Prerequisites: basic knitting skills

Please bring knitting needles and yarn in two different colorways.

Shawl Construction (Saturday)

Have you been dreaming of designing your own shawl, but don’t know how to get started?

This class will teach you basic shawl layouts. You will learn how different shapes are being constructed: Circular and semi-circular shawls, triangular shawls, symmetrical and asymmetrical shawls and others, and we’ll cover basic operations like gauge and size calculations.

You’ll learn special cast-on techniques and I’ll walk you through the single steps that lead to bringing your shawl ideas to life.

Skill Level: intermediate
Prerequisites: basic knitting skills

Please bring knitting needles and some yarn.

Finishing your handknits (Sunday)

Having spent so much time on knitting a project, it deserves a proper finishing!

Are you wondering about the best way to weave in loose ends? How to sew the single pieces of a sweater together? Are you unsure about how to properly block your lace shawl, or how to attach closures to a garment?

In this class we’ll cover all of the above, and more. We’ll talk about how to invisibly graft pieces together and we’ll try out the mattress stitch.

We’ll get you prepared for finishing your handknits in the best possible way that allows you to enjoy them for a long time.

Skill Level: beginner
Prerequisites: basic knitting skills

Please bring knitting needles and some yarn and a pointy darning needle.
